JA Our Community® introduces second graders to the many roles people play in a community and how communities work to meet shared needs. Students explore jobs, businesses, and the use of money, through activities that show how people rely on one another. The learning experience takes familiar places—like stores, schools, and neighborhoods—and connects them to larger ideas of cooperation and citizenship. By participating in hands-on experiences such as games and role-plays, students develop a sense of belonging and see themselves as capable contributors to their community’s success.
Following participation in the learning experience, students will be able to:
-- Define and describe a community and the variety of jobs people do there.
-- Explain how people earn income.
-- Explain how people choose different payment methods depending on what they’re buying.
-- Identify and propose a solution to a community problem.
-- Explain how the taxes we pay support government workers and services in the community.
JA Our Community is recommended for students in second grade. This learning experience offers flexible implementation options to meet the needs of students and teachers in a variety of use cases. It includes five 45-minute sessions, with optional digital assets offered throughout.
JA Learning Experiences support national and state standards in reading, mathematics, social studies, and work and career readiness. See below for more information on alignment with national and state standards.
